4月17日 Looking for Attractive Linux Media PlayerI need a good media player for Linux. But there's so many, and so many of them are so poor... If I use a media player, it's important that it complies with the following:
The list goes on but they're the ones I can think of now. Contenders are:
Suggestions, please. 11月29日 What's the difference between the retail and OEM editions of Vista? From a post I made on PCFormat's forum: Essentially, the box. But bear in mind, the vista box is quite cool, even if they did rip off the Nero 7 box... Anyway, there is a more subtle difference, that's the license and therefore, activation. The OEM license differs to the retail license in that the OEM software should only be sold with hardware. It's intended for companies like Dell that build complete computer systems for sale to ordinary consumers, OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer I believe. Companies like that don't have the time or need to be opening fancy boxes all day. And by pre-installing vista and forcing consumers to pay for it, they're keeping Microsoft as the market leader. So microsoft makes it cheap for them. Also, OEM software means that the Dell-like company is responsible for picking up the phone when the consumer claims their internets have been deleted by a virus from MSN, not Microsoft. You get no support from microsoft with OEM software. The retail version is intended for consumers. The fancy box is to make them want to buy it. The pretty manual is so they can install it easily. But it's expensive, because it's going direct to consumers. You also get support from microsoft - you pay for that too. But for what it's actually WORTH... So by buying the OEM edition, you're essentially saying: "I work in the industry, professionally building computers for others, I know what I'm doing and don't need you to convince me I want vista." Now, provided you know what you're doing, that's fine. The other, more important (to you) issue is activation. Vista will work for 30 days without activation, but then you have to activate or it will lock up, giving you access only to the internet for brief periods - to buy vista, since you're obviously a nasty pirate. Not a lost and frustrated customer. The first time you activate the OEM software, it will work. But if you have to reinstall, it won't. Makes no sense, I know. But microsoft really messed up the whole system. Fortunately, The Phone Method allows you activate it via microsoft's phone activation without any cracks or anything - but you can't use the automated phone system because that will fail. You have to talk to a customer service rep. Basically, Microsoft assumes that since that copy of vista has been activated before, it must have been installed on another computer. And that's not allowed under the terms of the OEM license. Of course, there's no law against you installing it twice on the same computer, in case it goes wrong for some reason. But Microsoft didn't think about that. So even if you do format and reinstall it, it won't activate. If you look out the window quick, you might catch a glimpse of your consumer rights as they float away. The retail license is different. As far as I know, you can activate it as many times as you like - Microsoft tried to limit it, but gave in to pressure. So I don't see why you couldn't install the retail copy on more than one computer, theoretically. Yes, I know - the whole reasoning behind activation, nonsense. It fails completely. But what can you do? So, it comes to whether you're going to be reinstalling it constantly. 3月11日 How to make any software trial last foreverPLEASE NOTE: WHAT FOLLOWS IS NOT A GUIDE TO USING PIRATE SOFTWARE. I DO NOT CONDONE OR ENTHUSE THE USE OF PIRATE COPIES. IT IS PURELY A THEORETICAL INSIGHT, AND ONLY PROPOSES COPYRIGHT CIRCUMVENTIONS FOR ACADEMIC INTEREST. IF YOU ARE, OR REPRESENT THE OWNER OF ANY SOFTWARE PRODUCT MENTIONED IN THIS POST AND WISH TO HAVE YOUR SOFTWARE'S NAME AND ANY ASSOSCIATION REMOVED, PLEASE CONTACT ME IMMEDIATELY BY EMAIL; ON SIRRONTHEMIGHTY@GMAIL.COM.
Ok, so the Shareware model is probably something you're familiar with, even if you didn't know what it was until now. It's essentially just, give out 30 day trials or restricted versions of your software for free, and get them everywhere - Download.com, Major Geeks, etc. Hopefully, people will find them useful and want to pay you for an unlock code. This will probably be in the form of a serial number, or CD Key.
Now, from the point of view of the average user, this was quite a cool way to work, because often they only needed the software once and could avoid having to pay for software they'll never need again.
Then people realised you could hand out a legitimately bought serial and everyone could unlock for free.
Then people started making keygens to make new serials from nothing, for free.
THEN, after a few years of that, software developers got wise and invented Activation. Activation is just a way of ensuring only one person is using an individual serial, and usually checks that that serial was provided by the software developer, not an unofficial keygen.
Oddly, early activation used... another serial. So crackers made keygens that took a serial, and made an activation code to go with it. Job done.
But the latest activation - used noteably by Microsoft for their new Windows Vista and Office 2007 products is smarter, and as yet, no-one has found a reliable way to get around it. Closest they've got is a fake activation website, a brute forcer that turned out to be a hoax, and a "frankenbuild" that uses activation components from a Beta, and will cease to function in June.
If Vista won't activate, and you have a legitmate copy, or if you have an OEM copy and want to transfer it to another computer (which isn't allowed really), you can simply call Microsoft. That's right, with the phone, call microsoft. Their staff for the Activation system are very helpful and don't ask many questions, so you just:
This definitely works for Microsoft Office 2007 Enterprise Edition. Use of a "pirate" serial, with enterprise edition Trial which you can get from the MS website, allows the user to active by phone. I tried this in a... dream... and it worked marvelously. I of course, did not really try it because that would be illegal. Enterpise Edition costs like $600 or something... I dunno dollars... Legitimate keys look like: V9MTG-3GX8P-D3Y4R-68BQ8-4Q8VD (although that's one I made up after looking at a real one... so don't try to use it - that would be illegal anyway.) Install it with no internet connection, or the option to activate by phone will be greyed out. I suspect you could get a pirate copy of Vista like that. By just asking for an activation key. Remember though, the activation key is different to the Product Key - however, I don't think they're linked. So in theory, the whole world could use the same Product Key, with different activation keys from the call centre. I say that because they didn't ask me for anything on the phone when I had to use this method to reactivate my copy of Vista - despite it being on the same computer. So... if they didn't ask for my product key but still gave me a working activation key, surely they work independantly? ^^ But what about software that uses keyfiles and weird registry settings? And all manner of crap? Well, it's my suspicion that you can get away with using a Virtual Machine for them. Incase you're not aware, a Virtual Machine is like a PC emulator to the untrained eye - but really it's not. It's a fake computer, running a separate OS that uses some of your real hardware at the same time as your ordinary operating system, like your CPU, and fake hardware all of its own for things like the graphics card. What I'm getting at, is how you can save their state, copy them, back them up, and restore them with ease. So.. if you keep a copy of them when the software was just installed, 30 days later you can just copy that back over the expired one ^^ right? hehehehe Seriously, I don't see how that could be any cooler. ok, well that's it for now, I might update this now and then SirronTheMighty -- out. 8月3日 Bit lateI wrote the following on Monday or something, but I couldn't get to my space due (I expect) to the dodgy update procedure. Well, after a weekend in which I went to two car boot sales, I can safely say that:
What did I buy? Well on Saturday SirronTheMighty purchased an old Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) controller for the horrific price of £2. This is because I intend to implant the innards of a cheap, Chinese mp3 player into it, and rig it up so that the buttons of the control pad control the mp3 player. I'm basically ripping off http://www.techeblog.com/index.php/tech-gadget/nes-controller-mp3-player but if you look carefully, that guy did a pretty crap job of it all told. The screen is hidden completely and you have to disassemble it completely to load more songs or even just change the battery! HA! I can do better than that. And when I do I'll post images etc. On Sunday I bought three Sinclair Magun Light Phasers in conditions varying from good to held together with insulation tape. No boxes or original tapes or anything, but still, if I clean them up... I had a go (or two... or three) with the good (cleanest) one, I connected it up to my 50p Sinclair ZX Spectrum 128K +2 and plugged it into the TV. I would usually use my PC - it has a TV card so anything that connects to a TV can be connected to my PC to use its monitor. BUT, due to the nature of how light guns work, that would have been a silly mistake. My monitor as you may know is a ViewSonic VX724 - once the champion of all flat panels. Flat panels work completely different to CRTs like TVs... I also managed to get an original Sinclair Joystick for the Spectrum +2 but it's a bit broken as a quick game of Pacman proved (it was a VERY quick game). No worries, I can fix it. The three light guns and joystick cost... *drum-roll* £1. Now you would be forgiven for asking "But Sirron, you didn't get any tapes! How did you play a game with the light gun without having a game to play?!". It's true that I have no original Spectrum tapes, but like with most things the internet can provide! Process of getting a free tape with a game on it off the internet:
This has worked for me every time, bar once when the original file I downloaded was corrupted. 7月12日 Not at work todayLet's just say that if I was a pokemon, and 'Work' was an attack, I'd have run out of power points for it yesterday. And I have some college stuff to organise...
Anyway, I've decided to renovate my tatty looking MSN Space. This time last year it was right smart, now it's rubbish looking.
Microsoft intends to bring MSN Spaces up to scratch soon, with a proper friends list and the like. Looks like they've finally got over their mindless opposition of people making new friends over the internet - I remember back in the 90s and early 00s they had chat rooms unrestricted by age or premium account ownership, then they closed them down on October 14th, 2003 (here in the UK anyway). They've since crept back in the US, but they're age limited and require a paid subscription.
I "hear" you can use certain programs to connect to the US service for free, but that would be "illegal".
Annnyway... back to the point... originally, your MSN profile was part of a crude system similar to myspace.com, and you could search for profiles that matched certain criteria. It also showed if you were on MSN Chat and people click a link to join you if you were.
Recently, they were updated and integrated into your MSN Space - they were already accesible this way, it just wasn't the only way to do so. Importantly, your MSN Messenger address can now be displayed on your profile, and you can choose who sees it; I think the permissions system needs more time to become reliable enough to use, but the theory is there. So now anybody that sees my profile can add me to their MSN Messenger contacts and have me blabber on to them about the history of wasting time on the internet some more. Proof that MSN doesn't mind you meeting new people anymore?
The directory search is, according to the soon to vanish remaining elements of the old MSN order, still there. But when I click the link I wind up on my Profile here on my Space so I get the impression it's gone.
In fact, it's been replaced by the ability to search MSN Spaces, a function long awaited by us Spacerers. Before, the only way to find a stranger's space was to click a link from a comment, or follow links in the "New Spaces" or "Updated Spaces" lists - if they were shown on the Space you started out on. Now you can search spaces for something that interests you. Not necessarily people, but again, the idea is there.
The "Windows Live" replacement to MSN often advertises itself as allowing you to meet new people, unlike MSN which seemed shocked that you would ever want to talk to anyone you didn't already know In Real Life, on MSN Messenger.
The new Friends List soon to come, partnered with the flashy new global map replacement to the updated spaces list I've seen around, should make Windows Live Spaces (name change in the pipeline) a half-decent way to meet people. Much better than myspace.com anyway.
So yeah, I'm dressing my Space up a bit... seeing as it's soon to represent me as a person to a much higher number of complete strangers than usual... 6月13日 WheeeeeeeeSo Microsoft deemed mortals worthy of Windows Vista Beta 2 on Wednesday/Thursday, I can't remember.
Anyway, I signed up and downloaded the 3.2 gig ISO and installed it on my second hard drive. And amazingly, it dual boots perfectly with Windows XP.
Which is a bloody good thing because hardly anything works on it. Most XP drivers don't work on Vista unfortunately which means all your slightly old/not a big brand name hardware will be useless because the manufacturers will probably never bother to write Vista drivers.
My ADSL modem driver works fine however o.O
But then, ironically, nVidia's special Windows Vista drivers don't work at all, and according to the release notes it's a "Non-nVidia Issue".
By that they mean it's not their fault so they don't intend to fix it... but the damn driver doesn't work because of it so why the hell is it up for download?! They do say how to fix it in the release notes, but the intructions are wildly inaccurate and don't work anyway.
So I can't play any games on Vista until nVidia makes a driver that works, because as always, Microsoft's drivers pretty much bypass all nice hardware acceleration and, just to take the piss, Windows claims that I should upgrade my graphics card because the Aero interface is running slowly.
Yeah. I'm gonna go buy a GeForce 7 series card just so windows maximize a little more smoothly. I think I'll make do until the better (not Beta) drivers are released.
When I install my games, they should appear in a like... games library thing. A bit like the library in Windows Media Player - it automatically downloads artwork for the game etc. That could be good, but I expect Microsoft expects every games publisher from now on to make their games add themselves to this menu, rather than just scanning your computer for games.
Hopefully, it won't be too hard to do it manually, then.
Windows Media Player is now in its 11th iteration, and it genuinely has got better. It looks better of couse, but now the library shows album artwork beside the tracks, which can be grouped by Album, Artist etc. It works very well, allowing you to quickly spot the album you want.
Of course, a big part of Windows Vista is the indexed instant searching. In the top right of most Windows there's a small text box. You type the first few letters of the item you want to find and the resuls instalty get filtered. So if you press "Y" is shows everything with a Y in its title or description, then if you press an "O" it shows everything with "YO" in it's title or descripion. It's truly instant and easily beats a manual search or waiting for Windows to check every single random folder except the right one while you muck around trying to get rid of the little dog before someone sees.
As far as application compatibility goes, well... it just doesn't go very far. The apps that do work often suffer from missing or broken toolbar buttons, weird performance, constant crashes or a perpetual splash (crash?) screen.
Microsoft applications work fine from what I can see. I'm yet to try OpenOffice.
My Microsoft keybord, oddly, has no proper support in Windows Vista, it works and some of the hotkeys work, but the XP driver disc won't install, and Microsoft's USA website does not provide a driver for
Windows Vista. The UK site denies all knowledge of my keyboard.
Security has improved, the anti-phishing scanner etc. are genuinely useful. I chose to turn off the User Account Control though. What that is basically, is a little box that pops up and locks up your computer until you click a button in it. It asks whether software should run etc., even if you were the one that chose to run it. You click "Run" or "Install" or whatever and its fine, but when you have to do it for half the processes that run in the background when you start your computer, it does get a little annoying. Like on Linux whenever you want to do anything it asks for your password or won't let you access your own bloody files so you have to keep doing "sudo"s to make anything happen...
Plus, it decided that IE7 shouldn't work anymore. So I disabled the bugger. Now everything is good - aside from the litte notification icon saying I'm not using the recommended security settings. Awkwardly, you can't choose to turn off certain warnings like you can in XP. It's all or nothing, and at nothing you still get an icon in your Notification Area (system tray).
The Aero interface is good though. Very good. I never used the XP teletubbieland theme or the equally hideous Silver or Olive Green ones, mainly because they're just cheap skins over the Windows 95 interface.
Aero howeveris completely different, it's rendered (so I'm told) as vectors - by your 3D graphics card, not as bitmaps by your CPU, so there's none of the annoying screen corruption that appears when a window stops responding and you move it for example. The 3D thing is not the good part surprisingly - it looks like Microsoft decided it was too awkward to use or get used to, and dropped the rumoured ability to rotate windows to how you see fit. Instead, the 3D stuff is limited to animations when you minimise, maximise, restore or close a window, and the "flip-3D" effect. You press "Start-Tab" and it rows all of your open Windows up in 3D and allows you to scroll through them and show the one you release the buttons at. It's like "Alt-Tab" for the 21st Century. Alt-Tab is still there though... with minor improvements.
The sidebar... ah the sidebar. One of the oldest rumoured features of Vista, from way back when it was known only by it's Microsoft codename "Longhorn". It spurred the project "Desktop Sidebar" http://www.desktopsidebar.com/ which is a Sidebar for XP... Microsoft did drop the Sidebar from Vista recently, but now it's back.
To be prefectly honest I'm not an RSS adict, and the clock in the notification area is enough, but it's still a useful, attractive and above all distinctive part of Microsoft's Latest.
So at the moment, what we've got with Windows Vista beta 2 is a good looking, intuitive and easy to use desktop environment that lacks support for some of the most important software packages and hardware devices. Sounds like Linux, but it is still a beta - if these issues are still present when it reaches Release Candidate 1 (RC1), scheduled for October, then I'm not sure I want to spend the rumoured £250 for Vista Ultimate edition in Janurary, only to have to carry on dual-booting XP pro just to use my TV card. 6月8日 Vista: now I'm gettin' down wit itSo I'm like "This is just one of those days where nothing goes right..."
Then I sit down and open Internet Explorer and my homepage is, of course, set to Live.com. It has a few RSS news feeds, one for general news, and three for technology news.
And one had a picture of the Windows Vista logo and a report about Microsoft just releasing Windows Vista Beta 2 to the public! So naturally I was then like "OMFG this day's not too shabby."
So I signed up for the beta as quickly as possible, skipped all the "warning your computer may suffer a fatal heart attack" blah blah blah "What is your job title?" System Administrator [ ] Sys Analyst [ ] Tech Support For God [ ] Student (of ICT) [x] blah blah blah Got myself a key code, clicked the link to the English x86 version download page, and it says they're "suffering high demand" and wouldn't let me download it. But it's all good because ZDNet cheekily has a direct link on a news report ^^ here it is: http://download.windowsvista.com/dl/preview/beta2/en/x86/iso/vista_5384.4.060518-1455_winmain_beta2_x86fre_client-LB2CFRE_EN_DVD.iso That's an ISO by the way, and you'll need a free key code from Microsoft before you can use it. I can't wait to be impressed then dissapointed by the new Aero interface... I'll post my opinion when I have one based on experience. 5月19日 I've probably done this before, but this is a quality remake, not just a re-run.Tutorial #47693
“Introducing the Tweak UI Module”
The ‘Tweak UI’ module is all about customising the User Interface of your MSN Space so that it best suits your mood, attitude, character – or even just makes your space difficult to read, so that you can laugh as people get eye strain trying to find out all the juicy details on how you ate your breakfast.
There’s not an awful lot you can change. Lesser services such as that ‘My Space’ nonsense allow you to customise much more, and add background images just to make it that bit harder to read the text. You can’t put custom background images in your MSN Space yet. Neither can you change the effect in the title bar of modules.
So, what I suggest is that you start off by choosing yourself a nice ready-made theme, that has a background image you like, and module title bars you like. Don’t worry about the colours and borders, those we can change.
I’m assuming you can already change your theme.
Note: the title of your space may disappear while you’re doing this, but it will still be visible to visitors to your space, though not to yourself when editing it. It usually comes back anyway.
First step: add the module to your list of available modules.
Type “&powertoy=tweakomatic” at the end of the title bar when on the front page of your space, in Editing mode (how it is when you first go on it).
Press enter or click “Go”. If you’re using Firefox, stop this now and go see a priest before it’s too late. If you’re using Internet Explorer, continue.
Wait for the page to load completely.
Second step: add the module to your space.
Click the “Customise” link, you’ll find it on the right, near the top, next to “Settings”.
A new row of links appears, please click “Modules”. A drop-down menu appears, look for “PowerToy: Tweak UI” and click the “Add” link next to it.
Now click the “Save” button in the yellow box at the top. There’s no need to move this module, it is not seen by anybody who visits your space, and there won’t be a white gap where it should be.
Third step: use the Tweak UI module to customise the appearance of your MSN Space.
For colours, the Tweak UI module wants you to use hex style HTML Colour Codes which are 6 character codes that represent a colour in terms of its Red, Green and Blue values. If that meant bugger all to you, here’s a link to a colour chart, the numbers on the colours are what you want to use to set that colour. http://html-color-codes.com/ Ok, I’ll talk you through each box on the module.
Background Colors – Inner
If you look this space you’ll see the background is not one solid colour – the part with all the writing on it is white, and the bit to the right with nothing in it is grey. This box is for the part that is white on this space, with the writing over it. If you’ve got a picture as your background, don’t worry about this box because the picture is covering the inner background and you won’t see the colour.
Background Colors – Outer
This is the blank bit on the right. The one on this space is grey as I just said. If you’ve got a background image, it may cover this.
Background Image – Position
This setting allows you to choose where your background image is located, if you have one. If you want your background image to repeat like tiles and cover the whole background, leave this setting at default. If you want it to be stuck to one side or something, change the position to the relevant side or corner.
Background Image – Repeat
This sets how you want the background image to tile, if at all.
“Default” leaves it as it is now.
“Repeat” makes it tile like bathroom tiles, in both directions.
“No Repeat” stops it from tiling; you only get the picture once.
“Repeat-y” means you want the image to be repeated down the page, but not sideways.
“Repeat-x” means you want it to repeat sideways, but not down the page.
Background Image – Display
This sets whether you can see the background image.
“Default” leaves it as it is now. If you have a background, it means you can see it. If you don’t have a background, it means you still don’t have one.
“Hide” removes the background, if you had one to begin with.
Font Colour – Link/Bullets
This box is for a colour code for linked text and bullets. So if I set this to a code for red, any hyperlinks on my space would be red, instead of blue. Font Colour – Text
This box is also for a colour code, and sets the colour of all the normal text on your space, make sure you choose a code that doesn’t clash with the background making it unreadable, and doesn’t look too similar to the links making them hard to spot.
Module Background – Color
This sets the colour of the modules’ background; on this space, this is grey. Make sure it doesn’t clash with the text, or it will be hard to read.
Module Background – Transparent
This is not for a colour code. It sets the transparency of your modules, which means you can see your background through them. It looks pretty cool, so long as you have a background image, although it looks okish if you have a background colour.
100 is completely visible, 0 is completely invisible, everything between is translucent. I’d aim for well over 50. 75 sounds about right.
Module Borders – Width
This sets how thick the borders on your modules are. You’ll have to experiment with this setting to get it how you want it – but remember to click “Save” at the bottom of the module before previewing your space! Otherwise all the settings you’ve changed will revert back to default.
Module Borders – Style
You don’t have to have a simple line as a border; you could have it dotted, dashed, in fact, you don’t have to have one at all.
The styles names are self explanatory. Make sure you set the width to something higher than 1, or you probably won’t be able to tell there’s an effect on it because it will be too small.
Module Borders – Color
This box is for a colour code and sets the colour of the modules’ borders, obviously.
When you’re done, click “Save” to save your changes or they will all be lost. Now click the “Preview My MSN Space” link from the top right to see your space how your visitors will see it.

How great is that? Well anyway, I'm currently working on one myself. Check back in a couple of days. If I like the results, I'll do a full tutorial. 11月30日 The part where I talk about internet radioI've been giving Shoutcast a try over the last couple of weeks, and I must say, it's pretty damn good.
What is it? Well it's a way of setting up and running your own online radio station, go to www.shoutcast.com for details or to download it. There's a directry of stations with all currently broadcasting stations listed along with the quality and number of listeners, orederd by popularity. The technical side is not as simple as it could be really, I mastered it in minutes, but for a n00b, it could be a serious challenge. The user interface desperately needs an overhaul for one thing.
To set up a Shoutcast radio station, you need to download Winamp (if you don't already have it), and the special plugin that allows you to send audio over the internet. You'll also need a server on which to host your station, because I have no money, however, I've been hosting it myself. I have a standard 512K broadband connection, so bascially, if you have broadband, you can do it. The only problem with hosting it yourself is that it eats a little of your bandwidth and you should only really be looking at broadcasting to a maximum of 32 listeners at any one time. This however, is enough - I don't get many listers... For people to listen they have to have Winamp, iTunes or Quicktime Player. Almost everybody has Quicktime, even if they don't know it. You can't use Windows Media Player unfortunately. If they have a compatible player, they just have to find your station in the directory and click Tune-In. Regarding the legal side, I am still trying to find out where I stand with playing music. In America, there are special laws regarding internet radio, that make it easy and safe to play music, here in the UK however, we are meant to have a liscense or something... In reality, our governemt doesn;t know so they've covered the subject in reed tape and reminded everyone that pirate radio is illegal. Thing is, this isn't really radio, it's streaming digital content over the internet. The main issue with pirate radio was that you were occupying part of the commerical radio frequency, and renting it out is a way for The Man to make money. If you didn't need a liscense to broadcast on normal FM radio, people would quickly fill up all available frequencies, and obscure commercial radio like Radio 1. you could, in theory, blank out the whole radio and nobody would be able to listen to anything but you... Anyway, that's real radio. This is internet radio, and there's no limit to how many internet radio stations there can be - that's why you don't need a liscense to talk and play music you made, or have permission to play from the copyright owners. So, it's not really pirate radio if you play copyrighted music is it? Not in the traditional sense where you could be in serious trouble because you've occupied one of Mr Blair's lovely unused frequencies without paying. Having a radio station online and playing music is really just like playing your music with your friends over. So, I think, the law should clealry state that as long as you only play music from CDs you paid for in a shop, and only to an audience of 50 or less, you don't need a liscense of any kind. Then many more people could have "webcasts" and there'd be much rejoicing. <<WHERE I TALK ABOUT PODCASTS (THE EASIER WAY)>> This same problem affects "podcasts". That, if you don't know, is a show that you record and put online for download. You refresh it frequently so that there is often a new show for people to download and listen to. The advantages of a podcast over a radio station are that you can spend as long as you want perfecting it, and that people can download it and listen to it at any time, rather than when you are broadcasting, which may be a bad time fo them. Podcasts are also easier to make than radio station broadcasts in the way that you don't need anything special to make one, just record a show, make it into an Mp3 or WMA with something like Windows Media Encoder (ask me if you want help with this) and upload it to a hosting site such as File Lodge. Then you can just put a link on your Space, blog or forum or whatever - you could just give it out to your friends on MSN Messenger or even put it in your Windows Media Player Module on your Space! Of course, the downside to a podcast is that you feel like you're talking to yourself when you're talking, it's different if you know the station is going out Live to people. As I'm writing this, it is occuring to me that making a podcast would make a lot more sense really. I think I might ditch my station. Yes, podcasts are so called because some people listen to them on their iPods. You don't have to though. If you want help with any of this, I'll be more than happy to explain in more detail. --STM 10月28日 Explanation of the "Funny Hits" listOk, I've realised that no-one seems to understand my Funny Hits list. You'll find it down the left hand side, it's full of crap. So full infact, that it wouldn't take anymore entries and I had to continue it in a blog entry that you'll see below somewhere. What the hell is it? I'll tell you. Well, when I was still an MSN Space n00b, I thought it would be cool to put my space into all the major search engines like Google, MSN Search and Yahoo. And sure enough, a couple of weeks later, people started visiting my space from seaches. How do you know they came from searches? See, if you click on "Settings", then "Statistics" on your MSN Space, you can see how many people have visited your space, it's like a primitave hit counter. The clever bit however is the Reffering Address. That tells you what page the person came FROM to get to your Space. So if someone was on www.HowToMakeAGoodExample.com, and they clicked a link to this space, the reffering address would be www.HowToMakeAGoodExample.com. So, I know someone came from a search if the reffering address is a search engine such as www.google.co.uk. But hang on, you've got THE ACTUAL SEARCH TERMS THEY USED! How do you know that? That's really just a happy accident, see, MSN don't just record the reffering site's homepage, they record the entire address of the page the visitor came from. So if someone came to this site from www.HowToMakeAGoodExample.com/LinksToGreatSpaces/, the reffering address would only be www.HowToMakeAGoodExample.com, but if you click it, you'll be taken to www.HowToMakeAGoodExample.com/LinksToGreatSpaces/. No, you still haven't answered the question. HOW DID YOU GET THE SEARCH TERMS? Ok, ok. Search engines use a code to identify searches, rather than saving them. So when you click "Back", you actually do the search AGAIN. I know it sounds a bit complicated but if I googled "food", in the address bar, I'd see http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=food&meta=. So, if Iclicked a link to this Space in there, (it's probably in there somewhere) the reffering address would be http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=food&meta=. If you look at that address carefully, you'll see the word "food", and if you click the link, Google will open and perform my search. That's how I've been recording the keywords. The search terms are in the reffering address, if you click it. Ok... so the thing you search for is in the reffering address, I'll buy that. But how the hell do you know where the person who searched was? Well, that's something that keeping this list has taught me. Search engines might have different names or domains in different countries. Google for example, is www.google.co.uk in the UK, but www.google.com in the US. Almost all countries have their own ".something", and I've learned quite a few of them. France is ".fr". MSN Search is called "Sympatico" in Canada. And, there's more to be learned from the address of the search. You can also see what page your site is on in the results list, most search engines put that in the address and if you can't be bothered to look at the code, click the link. The search will open on the right page. You can easily see the date and time that the person visited your space in the "Statistics" part of your space's settings. To make my list, I just clicked the reffering address, copied the search terms and pasted them as the name of the list entry, copied the address and set that as the URL, and wrote a short sarcastic comment about the search and published the list entry. My "Funny Hits" list doesn't contain all of the searches people have done to get here, but it does contain the one' I thought were worth noting. It's been very useful to me as it actually keeps me up to date with what people want to know. How to remove the MSN block checker was originally a very quick tutorial. But as I noticed that a lot of people were searching for ways to get rid of the block checker, I changed it to make it easier to follow. And wait, it gets EVEN BETTER. Because I'm writing the search terms in a list on my front page, every time the search engine updates its records of my space, it reads the search terms. SO, the more people search for something, the higher up the result list I'll be. Any search about Volvo BOT usually has me as result one now. Purely because of my search log. I do hope you understood that. If you didn't I'll be more than happy to explain because this search log or "Slog" as I'd hate to have to call it, is a very useful way of getting more hits from OUTSIDE the MSN Spaces community. Take a look at the Funny Hits list, click the search terms, you'll see the search. 9月21日 Was going to be something else but turned into a lesson about viruses...Here's a generic blog entry. I'm making it because I haven't made one in a few days.
I don't think I can write proper blog entries. Nuts. Well anyway... Ah, I know. VIRUS ALERT! EVERYBODY PANIC!
It has come to my attention that there's a lot more viruses at large right now than usual, and what's worse, they're much more sneaky and clever. I recently spoke to someone who said their computer was running slowly. I offered to help but they first asked me to help them with their desktop background. They said it said "Active Desktop Recovery"and so, I instantly told them to clik the silver button and then click "Yes". They said that didn't work. I asked what Windows version they were using, Windows 98, Windows ME or 2000 or what? They replied that they were using Xp. Xp doesn't use an "active desktop". I suddenly realised why it wasn't working. The whole thing was fake! You see, not alot of people know that you can set a webpage as a desktop wallpaper and it works just like you'd got it in Internet Explorer. So, all the hacker had to do was take a screenshot of the "Active Desktop Recovery" screen and change it so that when the user clicks the silver button and clicks "Yes", it does what the hacker wants (damage to the computer probably) and the screen remains. Then they needed to find a way of getting the web page they'd made to the computers of their victims, well there's many ways of doing that. In the end all that the person needed to do was change their background to anything other than the fake error message page. But do you see what I mean? Very sneaky, very clever. Even SirronTheMighty might have fallen into that trap if I was tired enough. So, be vigilant, if something looks out of place or new it probably shouldn't be there. And if you click "OK" for something and nothing happens... then you've got a problem. Please feel free to ask for help with virus removal -but don't take it personally if I don't want to talk to you directly. Viruses spread through Instant Messengers like MSN Messenger easily. Leaving me a comment is fine, or using my Forum (there's a link on the left under "MightyFeatures"). Prevention is always going to be better than cure though, so here's Sirron T. 8月25日 -=[JUHU] Massive 70ties=- The Review Of The LegendWhat the hell is it?
Enemy Territory Server
Who runs it?
JuHu, a German gamer clan How many player slots on it?
64 strangely, not quite 70 as you'd expect.
Does it ever fill up much?
It sure does, though sometimes it's mysteriously empty...
Am I going to need to download any mods or custom maps before I can play?
Yes, but it's worth it. The mods are great and the custom maps are only the best. Nothing very big to download.
What sets it apart from other servers?
Well for one thing the different skins on characters, you don't see them on any other servers. For another there's the cool custom sound effects, music clips, voice clips from films etc. Also, it doesn't permantely change your ET installation. The custom maps are only thr best, no crappy one's to sit through. Oh, and the campaigns are nice and long.
The sound effects just make it crazy, it's good. Do you ever play on it?
Yes, you might see me. I'm always either an axis soldier witha flamethrower or mobile MG-42 or an axis sniper with either a K-43 or an FG-42.
Ok, cool, can I see their elusive website now?
Yeah, ok, but it's in German. The site is www.juhu-clan.net. What's the IP address of this amazing crazy server?
62.75.216.248:27960 If that's wrong tell me please. 8月20日 Ok, here's how to get rid of the MSN Messenger Block CheckerDID YOU LISTEN?
NO. Did I not tell you not to get the MSN Block Checker? Well ok, here's how to get rid of it. Right, there's two ways to go about this. One of them requires you to boot into Safe Mode, the other doesn't, so if you don't know what Safe Mode is, don't worry. I'll tell you how to do it the easy way.
To begin with you need to download this file:
I HAVE PROVIDED THREE ALTERNATIVE LINKS BECAUSE THE FIRST ONE KEEPS GOING OFFLINE, SORRY FOR ANY INCONVENIANCE CAUSED, THERE'S NO NEED TO DOWNLOAD ALL OF THEM, JUST ONE. THE FOURTH ONE IS YOUR BEST BET BECAUSE I'M HOSTING THAT WITH FILELODGE AND THEY'RE USUALLY QUITE GOOD.
http://uk.msnusers.com/SirronTheMighty/Documents/ProcessKill.exe http://www.filelodge.com/files/444/ProcessKill.exe
I uploaded it just for you, after nicking it from somewhere else. It's not very big, so it shouldn't take long.
Now, run that program.
Once it's opened find the processes "Program Files\Block Checker\block-checker.exe" and
"Program Files\Block Checker\csrss.exe"
If there's only one of them, don't worry, we'll ignore the other as it can't function without the one you can find. Hold control (on your keyboard, usually labled "Ctrl") and click both of them, or just the one you can find. Now click "Terminate Selected" and you can click "Refresh" to see if it worked. Now, we've closed the damn thing but it'll come back next time you start your computer so we've got to delete now for good. Click "Start" (it's on your taskbar at the bottom of your screen) and click "Run..." (if it's not there, contact me via either leaving a comment, skypeing me or visiting my forum). In the box, type "REGEDIT" don't ever do this again unless you know what you're doing and please do as I say, mucking in here can be disastrous if you don't know what you're doing. Go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\Run" using the explorer bar along the left had side of the registry editor that will have opened (let me know if that makes no sense to you).
Delete the "BlockChecker" key.
Hard bit's over now.
Open "Program Files", it's a folder on your hard drive.
Find the "Block Checker" folder and delete it.
NOW IT'S DEAD, AND YOU HAVE ME TO THANK FOR IT.I said it would all end in tears.
If you got here from Roxie's then err, cool 8月18日 Listen up. Now.DO NOT DOWNLOAD THE MSN MESSENGER BLOCK CHECKER FROM
8月17日 How I intend to get more hits is to put commonly used search terms blatently accross my Space.So. I'm sat here looking through the most popular search terms, and I discover to my dismay that I can't really cover many of them at all. The ones I can do is some links to my favourite reference sites, seeing as the terms "Maps", "Driving Directions" and "Dictionary" are as popular as ever.
Here we go then, my favourite reference sites:
I'll add to this as more things come to me, as per usual with these things. |
